She did it first. I’m sure many of you have seen this meme floating around social media. There’s no denying that Selena Quintanilla-Peréz was a fashion trend setter. She drew inspiration from other artists, celebrities, her culture, and other versions of beauty. The outcome was magical.
As a curvy Latina, Selena was a personal role model for me not only for her immense talent as a singer and performer, but also through her fashion risks and confidence with her curvaceous body, which she undoubtedly exuded on stage.
As I’m gearing up for the first ever Fiesta De La Flor in honor of Selena, I felt it fitting to pay tribute to her via a fashion homage blog. Check out Fiesta De La Flor info here.
Here are some of those go to looks that Latinas imbue based off Selena’s style. These looks are timeless and still permeate the fashion industry today.
- Hoop Earrings – You can never go wrong with some hoop earrings. The bigger, the better. Selena rocked the hoop trend with amazing style. I just ordered an amazing pair from Ashley Stewart.
- Red Lipstick – Because duh! Red lipstick is all you need to go from a pretty look to absolutely stunning! This was Selena’s signature lip colour. I know I’ve said this before in a previous blog, but I am obsessed with Lime Crime Velvetines.
- The Bangs – Latinas have been rockin’ voluminous bangs since forever. Check out Selena’s bangs. Side swipe bangs, full bangs, voluminous bangs, Bettie Page bangs, they all rock!
- That Purple Dress – Who can forget that purple dress?! Glittery, sparkly, perfectly fit, and hot! Don’t be afraid to be bold and try something you never thought you could wear. Check out this incredible version from Monif C.
Selena was definitely a fashion icon. Her trends are still embedded in much of our fashion style. Overall, I think the biggest trend she set was her attitude: anything is possible, smile often, and go big!
And, that never goes out of style!
Love you Selena.
